Factory farming accounts for over 75% of all agricultural animal production globally. Behind the reassuring language of “free range” and “natural,” the industrial reality is one of extreme confinement, routine medication and high-speed slaughter lines that prioritise throughput over welfare.
The Numbers
A typical broiler chicken spends its 42-day life in a space smaller than an A4 sheet of paper. Laying hens in standard battery systems have 550 cm² per bird — less than a sheet of printer paper. Sows in gestation crates cannot turn around for months at a time.
The Legal Loopholes
Most animal welfare legislation in Europe and North America contains a “standard agricultural practice” exemption. This means that any practice accepted as normal within the industry is considered legal, regardless of the suffering it causes. The fox, as campaigners note, is guarding the henhouse.
What Can Change
The European Union’s End the Cage Age initiative secured 1.4 million signatures, triggering a legislative review that could phase out cage-based systems by 2027. Similar campaigns are gaining ground in Canada and Australia. Public pressure works — when it is sustained and loud.
What You Can Do
Reducing or eliminating animal product consumption remains the most direct individual action. Beyond diet, joining organisations that provide legal, investigative and lobbying support amplifies individual action into systemic change.
